Measles Quick Facts

History

- Measles vaccine introduced 1968
- Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000
- Roughly 100 to 200 cases per year (imported from foreign travelers) in the past 10 years
- 644 cases in US last year
- More than 100 cases in just January 2015 (82% unvaccinated)


MMR Vaccine

- Need two MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) shots 12-15 months and 4-5 years old
- The 2 shot series 97-99% effective in preventing measles


Measles Infection

- Typical symptoms fever, conjunctivitis, cough, sore throat and rash
- Symptoms begin 10-12 days after exposure
- Respiratory spread - cough or sneeze
- Contagious 4 days before rash appears
- Virus can live in solid surfaces for 2 hours
- 15% hospitalization rate
- Mortality 1 to 3 per 1000 cases (based on United States data from cases 20 years ago). Mortality is higher in children younger than 5 years old.
