Baby Overlapping Toes

Our daughter has overlapping toes. We noticed when she was around 10 months old and she is 17 months old now. Our pediatrician said we could see a specialist, but that the issue would probably resolve itself as she walked more. She seems to be walking fine, but we were just wondering if there are any long-term concerns.

Toe deformities are common in childhood. Fortunately, most will resolve with time. The worse cases involve significant overlapping and rotation of toes. Rarely, toe deformities will require surgical correction of problem tendons. X-rays and splinting have show to be of little benefit. Most toe deformities will resolve without intervention by 3 to 4 years old.

Your daughters case appears to be one that will self resolve. When she walks do all of her toes touch the ground? You may want to periodically take pictures of her feet to see if they are improving. I would recommend she see a specialist if the issue is not resolved by 3 or 4 years old, if her toes do not continue to improve or if you are concerned.
